Of Genes and Human Beings. Who Are We, and Who Might We Become?
Date: 02/2022 – 02/2023
Location: Deutsches Hygiene-Museum, Dresden
Client: Stiftung Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden
The special exhibition “Of Genes and Human Beings. Who Are We, and Who Might We Become?” at the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum in Dresden focuses on the current achievements of genetic research.
Rather than taking the form of a classic science display, the exhibition looks at how we deal with genetic knowledge – questioning the influence of genetic research on our place in the natural world and discussing the limits of what is ethically acceptable.
Among other things, it grapples with the question of whether what is scientifically feasible is also ethical. Which possibilities offered by genetics do we want to use, and which do we want to reject? The exhibition cannot and does not want to offer clear and simple answers. Instead, it sets out to provide visitors with serious food for thought.
The four exhibition sections are entitled “Origins”, “Identity”, “Health”, and “Nature”. Within the framework of these themes, the exhibition looks at scientific findings from the perspective of the social and cultural sciences: with exhibits from everyday life and science, culture and history, the approaches of contemporary art – and with interactive stations that invite us to find out for ourselves who we are and who we might become.
The exhibition can be visited in Dresden until 10 September, 2023.
