Jewish–Gregorian Calendar
Date: 06/2010 – 10/2010
Location: Old Synagogoue, Essen
Client: City of Essen
The Old Synagogue reopened as a house of Jewish culture with a new look in 2010. One special attraction is the Jewish–Gregorian calendar, which takes the shape of a large, mechanically operated machine to convert Jewish dates to their corresponding dates in the Gregorian calendar in an impressive way. Each calendar is depicted on a large cog over three metres in diameter.
By turning the winding handle, the two large cogs are set in motion. At the place where the cogs meet, a magnifying glass shows the dates from the two different calendars.
