The orangutans at Zoo Dresden have a new home: an elegant round building (designed by architectural firm Heinlewischer) that reverses the principle employed by most zoos and places visitors inside looking out at the animals. Large windows afford views into the apes’ spacious habitat. molitor was commissioned by the zoo to curate, plan and redesign the accompanying educational exhibition. Here, visitors can engage with various interactive stations to learn about the fragile rainforest ecosystem, how Sumatran orangutans live, and the zoo’s species conservation projects in Southeast Asia.
The design of the exhibition is restrained so as not to compete with the animals and in keeping with the modern architecture. Interactive elements are indicated with a bright blue. Only the exhibit illustrations are in colour, helping visitors clearly differentiate between content and decoration. The floral elements are reminiscent of 19th century botanical lithographs and illustrated accounts from research trips. For the very first time, molitor staged the exhibition using a wall printer. This technique allows for almost any motif to be printed on a variety of different surfaces – irrespective of material and unevenness.
