The Ethnologisches Museum (Ethnological Museum) and the Museum für Asiatische Kunst (Asian Art Museum) at the Humboldt Forum are showing a comprehensive presentation of the Ethnological Museum’s Korean holdings for the very first time. The “Ari Arirang” exhibition presents around 120 works, including contemporary pieces, which convey an impression of Korea’s rich culture from the 19th century to the present day. It also testifies to Germany’s long-standing interest in and fascination with Korea since the 1870s, with 2023 having marked the 140th anniversary of official diplomatic relations between Germany and Korea.

The title of the exhibition is inspired by the traditional Korean folk song “Arirang”, an important symbol of Korean identity, and refers to rare sound recordings from German prisoner-of-war camps of the First World War that are held in the Ethnological Museum’s Phonogramm-Archiv. Two of these moving recordings can be experienced in the exhibition at audio stations.
